My first blog post...

After much encouragement from friends, I am starting a blog.  Although I have been teaching for 13 years, this is the second year that I am departmentalizing.  Yes, in Kindergarten, hence "An Un"Common" Kindergarten."  I teach three blocks of science and social studies each day.  I work with two other amazing kindergarten teachers.  One does ELA and the other does Math.  We all integrate writing into our subject areas.  Each classroom has stations throughout the room and we all have a sight word wall as well as a vocabulary word wall that is more specific to our subject. It makes me sad that in many classrooms, science and social studies are pushed onto the back burner.  My hope is to share with you some of the lessons and stations that I do with my classes.

I am also hoping to be able to navigate this cyber world of blogs, bloglovin', Facebook, TPT, TN, Instagram...to see where this new and exciting adventure leads me.  One thing at a time, though.

The very first experiment I do at the beginning of the year is the "Rainbow Milk Experiment" that I read about on Kindergarten Kindergarten.  I also used her science badge idea to divide up my class into groups.  I used the milk experiment to introduce science vocabulary like, "experiment, hypothesis, record, observe, data."  The following data sheet was used to record their observations.  In the first circle, I had them draw what their plate of milk looked like after putting in the drops of food coloring.  The second circle was what they thought the milk would look like after they put soap into the food coloring.  In the last circle, I have them draw what happened to the milk.  Because this is one of our first experiments and its done early in the year, I like to have them visually represent what they see before I expect them to begin writing about their experiments.  Please feel free to use the data sheet that I created with your students.

Okay...I cant figure out how to insert a document to share.  :(

Will keep trying!
